Merced “Human Trafficking” Arrests

This is an example of what Human Trafficking is NOT.  According to John Vanek, nationally recognized expert on Human Trafficking, “according to this article, which reads more like a press release, all the suspects were booked on charges for attempting to engage in sex with a minor.  The 288 charges are in teh Penal Code section for sex crimes.  Human trafficking is the exploitation of another.  So while the MPD did a great job arresting bad people, this isn’t really a human trafficking operation.  As police departments learn, they can label these and other “demand” ops as anti-human trafficking, they often neglect to engage in operations to identify actual victims of trafficking.  For all the (good) work MPD invested here, they did not identify or help an exploited person.”  Read the full article here.  4/21/17
